CHAPTER SEVEN
HEATHER
I find the kitchen easy enough and stand watching Chris and his daughter for a few seconds before they notice me. His daughter is gorgeous. Tall like her father, with his brilliant green eyes. Though her face belongs to her alone. Unless she takes after her mother, Chrisâs ex-wife.
A faceless ex, I can handle. A daughter that is taller than me and looks to be high school or college aged? It throws me for a loop. One I am still trying to come to terms with. Especially having her walk in on me and her dad mid-action. My cheeks blaze with embarrassment all over again, and I have to admit only my lack of a vehicle kept me from creeping out when Chris went downstairs. My fingers had hovered over my phone repeatedly until I sucked it up and stuffed it back in my pocket.
Because yes, heâs a dad. Heâs also an amazing lover and sweet. Unbelievably sweet. I want to see where this goes with him. More than anything Iâve ever wanted in my life up to this point. Which means I needed to make myself presentable, go downstairs, and push the awkwardness aside and meet his daughter. If I want to be a part of Chrisâs life, that means Iâll be a part of hers as well.
And crazily enough, the idea of being a stepmom isnât that⦠well, that crazy. Maybe itâs looking too deeply into things, but weâve been going so fast so far, whatâs a bit more?
So as I watch Chris and his daughter, Iâm also picturing another kid or three in the bunch. I probably have a sappy smile on my face, and thatâs the moment his daughter catches sight of me. Her entire body freezes, and the look that comes over her has me wishing I had done the walk of shame to an Uber. When she can finally tear her eyes away from me, her green orbs bounce over to her dad, then back to me as if sheâs trying to see what in the world we would ever have in common. I get it, Iâm shocked Iâm with Chris too.
But Iâm fine until I notice the wary expression on his face which he quickly tries to hide with a sickly looking smile that doesnât reach his eyes. He moves some eggs onto plates, then turns back to me and thereâs a spark of something else in his gaze.
âHeather,â he says, walking over and wrapping an arm around my waist, hugging me close to his body. âI want you to meet my daughter, Mia.â
Calling upon my professional training, I move forward with a smile and extend my hand. âHi, Mia. Iâm Heather.â
A cool hand limply shakes mine as she doesnât even try to hide her unease.
When her hand tightens and she leans closer, I almost jump as her words hiss into my ear. âYou be good to my dad. He deserves to be happy.â
I donât need to fake my smile this time. I meet her gaze levelly and whisper back.
